ilta-aurinko_puun_takaaA fabulous songster, the Thrush Nightingale (Luscinia luscinia) is the regional bird of South Karelia. More often heard than seen, this modest looking bird lives in deciduous woods, lush water meadows and deep thickets.

Spotting the Thrush Nightingale is not made any easier by the fact that the male birds only sing when well hidden by trees or branches. The song of this virtuoso performer consists of recurring phrases which include whistling sounds and flutey or chattering notes. The Thrush Nightingale is particularly famous for the sonorous, pure sound of its song.
