hiitolanjoki_lahnanen_kalastajat_kuvassaThe regional fish of South Karelia is the Finnish Landlocked Salmon (Salmo salar m. sebago). A freshwater fish, the Landlocked Salmon is an ecological sub-species of the salmon which lives in lakes and rivers.

Following the industrial development of the rivers which were the spawning grounds of this sub-species, Finland's stocks of Landlocked Salmon today rely on fish farming. The largest Landlocked Salmon ever caught weighed 10.08 kg.
