Northern Growth Zone

(Release, 4.9.2017)

The Northern Growth zone is a network of collaborators backed by the Finnish Ministry of Economics and Employment, focused on supporting ventures related to the flow of goods to, from, and through Finland. The project’s main goals are:

  • Enhance Finnish competitiveness on the export and transit markets
  • Encourage the creation of lasting – traditional and digital – services in the transport sector
  • Commercialize innovations with international collaboration
  • Increase cohesion of common labor and financial markets within the Community
  • Establish Finland as an attractive environment for business and industry

The network is made up of a number of southern cities of Finland and the regions within, including: Espoo, Helsinki, Kotka, Kouvola, Lahti, Lohja, Pori, Porvoo, Rauma, Salo, Turku, Uusikaupunki and Vantaa. Regions include: South Karelia, Kymenlaakso, Päijänne Tavastia, Satakunta, Uusimaa and Southwest Finland.

Stretching from Stockholm to Turku and Helsinki, and onwards to St. Petersburg, the Northern Growth Zone connects a market of €330bn and a population of 13 million, along the EU defined TEN-T scandinavian-Mediterranean Core Network Corridor. 60% of all Finnish export is produced within the Northern Growth Zone, signifying its importance to Finnish trade, logistics and investment.

The Regional Council of South Karelia participates in the Northern Growth Zone by initiating an effort to increase the use of innovation and digitalization in foreign trade, and flow of goods. Developing the Imatra-Svetogorsk border crossing point, and the processes associated with crossing it by both road and rail, will be a core objective. Aiding the South Karelian council in its project are a number of local industries and enterprises, including Stora-Enso Oyj and Vuoksi talot Oy. The project is also supported by the Regional Council of Helsinki-Uusimaa, and the Finnish Transport Agency.
